At six-twenty this morning, Renata was up and at ’em and noticed a globe of light through the blinds covering the front door. It can’t be, she thought, as she moved toward the door and gently opened it. Before her a giant, yellow moon hung in the sky, suspended over the distant Everglades. Thankfully, her first reaction was to come wake me so that I wouldn’t miss this mesmerizing sight.
I followed her to the open hallway in front of our twelfth-floor apartment and we stood together in silence and disbelief. For ten minutes we stared. We grabbed the binoculars to inspect the moon’s surface more closely. We took a few photos that were unable to capture the magic of this moon set. We stared out over a quiet city devoid of any stirrings of people on the move to work. We watched as the moon quickly disappeared into the distance, getting fainter and fainter until it looked only like the ghost of the moon.
And now, toward the east, the sun hovers just below the horizon, ready to crest above the waves at any moment. Nature’s consistent march is on full display, inspiring me to appreciate the beauty that surrounds me and to welcome a new day full of possibility.
